Erosion a ‘serious situation’

July 6, 2019 by Local Staff Environment

Erosion is causing damage along the North Shore nature area, and trees are falling. (Chris Allen)

As local Chris Allen was paddling a canoe along the shoreline of Niagara-on-the-Lake, he photographed what he considers an “extremely serious situation” along the Niagara Shore nature area.

He went to the four-mile point recently and says the damage from erosion is getting worse, with more of the bank falling away, and more trees down.

Very old and very healthy oak trees will be the next to go, he says, with no hope to save them.

There is also danger to nesting sand swallows all along the face of the banks, in the tunnels they dig, and no way to get back what is lost along the shoreline, Allen says.
