Welcome to Auchterlonie on Astrology for the last week of October.

This is the week of the New Moon in Scorpio on Sunday, Oct. 27. Also the last week of Mercury in Direct Motion. Mercury turns Retrograde on Thursday, Oct. 31.

If you follow my podcasts on Facebook or my website, this is the first week where we look at some fun facts of astrology. Like the meaning of The Ides of March, or the names of the days of the week and how they are astrologically derived.

But first, the week ahead.

Thursday, Oct. 24, the Moon continues in Virgo with opportunities early in the day, which may be missed because of laziness. And with challenges later on as emotions and imagination are at odds. Happy birthday to the United Nations, to Bill Wyman of the Rolling Stones and to actor Kevin Kline. The UN is 74. Bill Wyman is 83. And Kevin Kline is 72.

Friday, Oct. 25, the Moon moves into Libra in the afternoon. Most of the day is a bit flat. But Venus in Scorpio gets a helping hand from Pluto in Capricorn, making for opportunities to put your foot down and make a shared investment better. Pablo Picasso was born Oct. 25, 1881. And Katy Perry turns 35 today.

Saturday, Oct. 26 is the last day before the New Moon, with six connections between the Moon and other objects during the day. The best of these is when Mars and the Moon meet in the afternoon. It’s an energetic time when love is in the air! Sony’s PlayStation 2 is 19 today. Pat Sajak wheels his fortune to number 73. And Keith Urban turns 52.

Sunday, Oct. 27, is the Day of the New Moon in Scorpio at 11:38 tonight. This New Moon promises the start of a month of new opportunities. Especially for Scorpio, Pisces and Cancer. For Scorpio the opportunities are all encompassing for you. For Pisces they present themselves as travel or learning opportunities. And for Cancerians, look forward to new developments in love and with children. The New Moon presents a fresh start for everyone, depending on where it falls in your birth chart. This New Moon also comes with an opposition from Uranus in Taurus. We need to be relaxed in order to deal with a surprise change of direction that could be proven to be long term and better. Also, be aware that responsibilities can be very taxing today. It was Oct. 27, 2004 that the Boston Red Sox won the World Series for the first time since 1918, ending the Curse of the Bambino. And Kelly Osborne turns 35 today.

Monday, Oct. 28, is a day to keep low and pay attention to your health, imagining ways to make it better. Bill Gates turns 64 today. Julia Roberts is 52.

Tuesday, Oct. 29, is a busy day as the Moon moves from Scorpio to Sagittarius and connects with eight other planetary objects on the way. It’s a day of ideas, building partnerships and relationships and it’s also a day of healing. Muhammad Ali won his first professional fight on Oct. 29, 1960 in a six-rounder against Tunney Hunsaker (who?). Dan Castellaneta, the actor who is the voice of Homer Simpson, turns 62.

Wednesday, Oct. 30, sees Mercury in the same spot as Venus in Scorpio on the last day. Mercury is direct before going retrograde tomorrow. As I have said previously, all the planets turn retrograde from time to time. By that we mean they appear to begin to move backwards in their orbits, covering space they have already traversed. This is an illusion owing to our perception of them as they appear to move slowly and then backwards for a time. Finally they pick up speed and begin to move forward again. When Mercury does this ,we often see problems in communications or with communication devices or systems, like call phones or the internet. Today is a day to speak about love and to improve relationships and partnerships. The first successful kidney transplant was performed on this day in London England in 1960. The Fonz, Henry Winkler, is 74.

Next week is the First Quarter Moon in Aquarius on Monday, Nov. 4.

The podcast version of Auchterlonie on Astrology contains more information than the version which appears here in The Local.

This week I am unraveling the meaning of the names of the days of the week and showing how they connect to the planets. And I explain the meaning of The Ides of March.
