New sewage treatment plant now operating

The new wastewater treatment plant, originally scheduled to open in 2016, is now up and running.

The regional director of water and wastewater services says “the biosolids process section of the new Niagara-on-the-Lake Wastewater Treatment Plant is up and running.”

Joe Tonelatto says  all deficiencies related to the digester have been resolved, and the digester, gravity belt thickener and methane gas system is now operating in accordance with the design intent.

The entire plant is now fully operational and plant effluent continues to meet Ministry of Environment quality requirements, he says, and the Region intends to discontinue the direction of effluent from the new wastewater treatment plant to the lagoon by the end of this week, when it will go directly to the outflow.

The new plant, which was first expected to open in 2016, has been receiving all wastewater from all three NOTL pumping stations since August, says Tonellato.

The Region is discussing an official opening celebration of the plant, but no date has been set, he says.
