The Role

Reporting to the Manager of Labour Relations this position has the primary responsibility of providing Labour Relations expertise and advice to all levels of management at Algoma Steel and acts as the day-to-day liaison/partner between Human Resources (HR) and the rest of the organization for Labour Relations.

Key Deliverables

  • Advise and assist managers, supervisors, employees and the HR team on the interpretation and application of the collective agreements, employment legislation, employee conduct rules and other relevant employment issues.
  • Meet regularly with the appropriate union officers, department managers as well and the HR Business Partners (HRBPs) to ensure that administrative requirements within the collective agreements are fulfilled and to address deficiencies as required.
  • Provide timely and accurate counsel to managers, supervisors and the HRBPs on issues related to the administration of the grievance procedure and provide proactive assistance to identify and resolve employee concerns to pre-empt grievances.
  • Conduct investigations, summarize findings, and recommend and implement solutions related to formal complaints (e.g. harassment complaints) consistent with procedural requirements in collective agreements and relevant employment legislation.
  • Lead processes and provide coaching on all matters including but not limited to performance management, attendance management, conflict resolution, problem-solving and discipline.
  • Partner (provide guidance) with client groups on various HR processes such as workplace redesign, organizational structure, lines of sequence, scheduling, health and safety.
  • Prepare for and attend arbitration cases.
  • Assist in contract negotiations by researching issues and providing relevant information and support throughout the process. Develop bargaining proposals in real time as disputes arise.
  • Ensure the company complies with the relevant provisions of the Labour Relations Act, Employment Standards Act, Occupational Health and Safety Act and the Human Rights Code.
  • Member of various joint committees including Seniority and Union-Management Committees.
  • Will become an expert on Algoma Steel’s collective agreements.
  • Must stay current with employment legislation and arbitral case law.
  • Create training decks and lead training sessions/focus groups.
  • Lead special projects.

Core Competencies and Skills Required

  • Must have a University degree or college diploma in Business or a related field, with specialization or additional coursework in Human Resources.
  • Labour Relations experience in a unionized environment, including collective agreement administration, conflict resolution, grievance management and arbitration preparation.
  • Heavy manufacturing industry experience is an asset.
  • Excellent working knowledge of the Labour Relations Act, the Employment Standards Act, the Occupational Health and Safety Act and the Human Rights Code.
  • Experience in educating and supporting key organizational stakeholders on collective agreements.
  • Enthusiastic about leading, facilitating and participating in process improvements including IT automation.
  • Good personal computer skills, including Outlook, Word, Excel and HRIS. Experience with SAP is an asset.
  • Excellent analytical and creative problem solving skills.
  • Experience facilitating solutions with employees at all levels.
  • Must be able to work on a team and be a valuable and contributing team player.

This is an exempt position.
