By the Lake, on the Lake on display at Pumphouse arts centre

The work of local artist Tara Korkmaz is featured at the pumphouse until July 26, with a reception to meet her and see the exhibit on Sunday, July 7.

The contemporary artwork of local artist Tara Korkmaz is a captivating exhibit that explores the interplay between abstract and the representational. The basic forms of nature, such as curls, lines and shapes, are found  everywhere. When put together, these basic forms represent what surrounds us.

By the Lake, on the Lake, featured at the Niagara Pumphouse Arts Centre in the Joyner Gallery until July 26, pays homage to the beauty and serenity of Niagara-on-the-Lake. The lake acts like a mirror reflecting the sky, trees, and clouds. The water also experiences a perpetual cycle of renewal and growth. Korkmaz invites viewers of her work to reflect on their surroundings and appreciate the peace found amidst historical turmoil.

Part of the history of the area includes the War of 1812, and what once was in turmoil is now at peace. The artist says she hopes peace will come to other areas in the world experiencing war.

When preparing to work on a piece of art, Korkmaz explains that she does extensive research. She reads, researches the topic, and with a collage of sketches, drawings, notes and ideas comes a blending of analogue and digital techniques, which transform into the final finished piece. Her analogue techniques might include hand cut images of paper or a drawing she did, while her digital techniques include photos she has taken. "Everything in life is a collage of different things,” she says.

Her deep connection to her community is reflected in her artwork. People are connected to nature through common things such as grapes, flowers, water, to name a few, she explains, and what you see in her paintings is part of everyday life, symbolic of something that connects people to Niagara-on-the-Lake.

Korkmaz says she hopes to inspire viewers to see the ordinary in new ways, to appreciate the differences, to see the brighter side of events. The vivid colours of her work bring out a smile, a sense of peace, a feeling of hope.

The public is invited to the opening reception on Sunday, July 7 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Niagara Pumphouse Arts Centre. It is an opportunity to meet and speak with Korkmaz, learn about the inspiration behind her pieces, and connect with fellow art appreciators. Korkmaz will speak at 2:30 p.m., offering insight into the themes and creative process behind her artwork.

This event is supported by Chateau des Charmes, which will be providing an assortment of wines for guests to enjoy.

Come out for the afternoon and be inspired by the bold, beautiful and brilliant artwork of Tara Korkmaz.
