The Niagara-on-the-Lake Chamber of Commerce, and its arm, Tourism NOTL have appointed a new leader to move them forward with their objectives.

After a search that led to “eight or nine prospective candidates,” and taking the time to sit down and get to know each of them, board chair Andrew Niven announced that Kathy Weiss has been chosen as the organization’s Interim executive director, effective Monday May 20.

The chamber embarked on its search to fill the interim position in mid-April, when it parted ways with executive director Minerva Ward.

About her leaving, said Niven at the time, “while transitions like these can be challenging, we are embracing this opportunity for renewal and growth, and excited for fresh perspectives, innovative ideas and enhanced collaboration with our partners.”

Weiss, a Niagara-on-the-Lake resident, was employed by the town for a time, taking on the task of economic development, a position funded through a grant.

“Kathy held many roles, including project facilitator for the town,” said Niven in a press release.

“Her deep understanding of the business and tourism industry, combined with her dedication to collaboration and innovation, make her an ideal fit to lead the organization through the opportunities that lie ahead.”

Niven told The Local the chamber is excited to have her onboard, “and she’s seems excited as well.”

As a resident of NOTL, she understands its dynamics, he says. “She has a lot of strong bonds with the community — residents, businesses and tourism. And everyone at the Town has been very complementary about her.”

The board is pleased to have someone who understands the direction the town is going, and will work collaboratively to make that happen, the news release says. “Her proven leadership abilities and strategic vision will be instrumental in advancing our mission of promoting tourism and fostering economic development in our vibrant community.”

“She’s big on structure and organization,” Niven told The Local. “It all comes down to collaboration, and her background and ability to help advance our vision.”

Kathy joins the chamber and Tourism NOTL “at an exciting time, as the organizations begin to finalize their strategic and tactical marketing plans. With a passion for driving business growth and promoting the unique cultural and historical offerings of Niagara-on-the-Lake, Kathy is well-equipped to lead the organization forward during this critical period of revitalization.”

Weiss says she is honoured to have the opportunity to serve as the interim executive director. “Niagara-on-the-Lake holds a special place in the hearts of residents and visitors alike, and I am committed to working closely with the board and stakeholders to promote our community’s rich cultural heritage and support the growth of our local economy.”
