NEWS RELEASE
COMMUNITIES IN BLOOM
************************
Niagara Parks Botanical Gardens received a rating of 5 Blooms - Silver and a special mention for Tree Management during the 2024 National/International Symposium and Awards Ceremonies in the City of Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. Niagara Parks Botanical Gardens participated in the Special Attractions - Evaluated category.
Over the summer, trained volunteer judges travelled to participating communities to evaluate the overall contributions of municipal council and departments; industry; businesses and the private sector – including volunteer efforts – regarding the following criteria: Community Appearance, Environmental Action, Heritage Conservation, Tree Management, Landscape and Plant & Floral Displays.
Following their evaluation, volunteer judges Dr. Andrea Bocsi and Alain Cappelle wrote:
“The Niagara Parks Botanical Gardens’ tree management stands out for its sustainable and comprehensive approach. Through conservation, education, innovation, and community engagement, they ensure a healthy environment with long-term ecological and social benefits. Partnering with the Niagara Parks School of Horticulture, the Gardens serve as a living laboratory for students and researchers. Their tree policy includes measures to adapt to climate change, such as selecting resilient species and using irrigation systems to mitigate drought effects, safeguarding this valuable resource for future generations.”
Within the actual context of climate changes and environmental concerns, communities involved in the program can be proud of their efforts, which provide real and meaningful environmental solutions and benefit all of society.
