The Niagara-on-the-Lake Fire & Emergency Services Department was awarded a $500 grant from the national nonprofit, Home Fire Sprinkler Coalition Canada (HFSC), and The Co-operators to increase awareness about the life-saving benefits of home fire sprinklers.

To educate the public about home fire sprinklers, the Town’s Fire Community Risk Reduction Division is partnering with the Queenston Volunteer Firefighters Association on their 75th-anniversary event to host a Fire Prevention Week Open House. All Niagara-on-the-Lake residents are encouraged to attend this event, meet their local firefighters, and learn about critical fire prevention tools, including home fire sprinklers. It’s a great way for families to get involved in the community while improving their safety knowledge.

  • Date: Saturday, Oct. 12
  • Time: 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  • Location: Fire Station 4 (5 Dumfries Street, Queenston)
  • Details: This family-friendly event will include an open house, a touch-a-truck event with a BBQ and a bouncy castle. Attendees will have the opportunity to interact with firefighters, learn how sprinkler systems work, and explore other fire prevention techniques.

According to HFSC:

  • Without sprinklers, today’s home fires can become deadly in as little as two minutes.
  • Fires put residents and firefighters at risk from toxic smoke, heat, and flames.
  • With sprinklers, the sprinkler closest to the fire will activate when the temperature reaches about 74 C.
  • The sprinkler will spray water directly on the fire, controlling or putting it out. In most home fires, just one sprinkler activates.
