Garden club celebrates flower show wins

The show entries were broken down to two categories, horticulture and design.

The Garden Club of Niagara hosted their annual Fall Flower Show recently at the Old Lecture Hall of the Niagara Parks School of Horticulture, with the theme of New Leaf.

Show chair Kit Thompson and co-chair Julie Detenbeck explained the choice of this theme New Leaf. Leaves are a very important part of the change in seasons in autumn. With new people coming to the Garden Club, and new people helping to organize the Flower Show it seemed appropriate - New Leaf.

Barbara Johnston also joined the planning committee. Preparations started well in advance. Judges were contacted early in the summer; show cards, awards, instructions and supplies were organized. Meticulous notes kept from the previous show were invaluable in fielding such a complex show.

On the actual day of the show there were about 20 members involved in various roles. Set up crew, clerks, registrars, mentors, supply runners and emergency fixers were all on hand. Mentors were there to help those who were new to the entry process. The tear down crew was invaluable.

The show consisted of two divisions - design and horticulture. The horticulture division included numerous categories some of which were: one specimen bloom - dahlias, one spray, chrysanthemums, three stems and one cultivar - marigolds, one spray - rudbeckia, three blooms and one stem - zinnias.

The design division included five classes: Promise for the New Year, Falling Leaves, Winter is Coming, Bare Branches, and Windblown.

Students of the Niagara Parks School of Horticulture, members of the public and club members were invited to view all the entries in the afternoon. The colours of the entries were as beautiful as the autumn leaves on the grounds of the School of Horticulture.
