The Ontario government is moving ahead with plans for the Grimsby GO Station to help tackle gridlock and provide more convenient connections to jobs, housing and transit in one of the province's fastest-growing regions. The province is collaborating with the Regional Municipality of Niagara and Town of Grimsby and will be initiating an engineering assignment as part of the process for identifying lands required for the Grimsby GO Station.
"This is welcome news for commuters in Niagara," said Sam Oosterhoff, MPP for Niagara West.
"As one of the fastest growing regions in the province, our province is making record investments in transit across the province, including the Request for Proposal to identify the lands required for the Grimsby GO Station."
"Under the leadership of Premier Ford, our government is investing $70 billion over the next decade to carry out the largest transit expansion in North America," said Hon. Prabmeet Sarkaria, Minister of Transportation.
"A new GO station in Grimsby will be a game-changer for the community, giving more commuters in Niagara easy access to fast, reliable and affordable public transit."
The Ontario government is advancing plans - including design work - as part of the Niagara GO Extension project, while exploring transit-oriented community opportunities in the region. The Transit-Oriented Communities program has the potential to help build a vibrant, mixed-use community in Grimsby, bringing in more housing, jobs, public amenities and entertainment within a short distance from transit.
"Our government is taking action to reduce gridlock by upgrading and modernizing transit systems across the province, enabling more efficient, accessible and cost-effective transit solutions for everyone," said Hon. Kinga Surma, Minister of Infrastructure.
"As part of this work, we are seizing the opportunity to build vibrant, mixed-use communities around transit stations, to make it faster and easier for residents to access reliable transit, right in their own neighbourhoods."
Through the Niagara GO Extension, the province continues to make improvements to the GO network to deliver faster service and new connections to Niagara Region. Last spring, the Ontario government announced the largest GO service expansion in more than a decade, adding more than 300 weekly train trips.
"The expansion of GO transit services in Niagara has been one of Niagara’s top priorities, one in which all of our municipalities have been unified in advocating for," said Jim Bradley, Chair of the Regional Municipality of Niagara.
"Today's announcement is a big step forward for all of Niagara, and I look forward to continued partnerships, investment and accomplishments that will serve the current and future transit needs of Niagara."

- The Request for Proposals is expected to be awarded in the Spring.
- In 2024, almost 524,000 customers travelled through St. Catherines and Niagara Falls GO and VIA stations.
- Earlier this month, the province announced an investment of nearly $500 million to refurbish 181 GO Transit bi-level rail coaches at the Alstom plant in Thunder Bay, along with over $350 million to refurbish 121 GO Transit bi-level rail cars at Ontario Northland's facility in North Bay.
