Pedestrians have a safer journey and shorter wait to cross Mississagua Street at Anderson Lane now that a new pedestrian crosswalk has been installed.
Crews from Niagara Region along with contractor Beam Excavating have been chipping away at the new safety measure on the busy thoroughfare the past three weeks. Last Thursday a region employee was putting final touches on a solar panel on the creek-side post that will power the flashing lights which will soon be operational, warning motorists to stop.
As that section of Mississagua Street is a regional road, the new crossing is under the jurisdiction of the region and as such, the cost of the installation is borne by that level of government. Jeff Black, associate director of traffic and systems at Niagara Region, told the Local that the Mississagua Street-Anderson Lane location was pinpointed by residents of NOTL as an area of need, largely due to the presence of the NOTL Community Centre, the Public Library and the Niagara Nursery School on Anderson Lane.
Though the flashing lights are not yet operational, pavement markings and signage warning motorists from both directions that a pedestrian crossing is nearby. have been installed. The Local witnessed several motorists stopping at the chevrons on either side of the crosswalk Friday to allow safe passage of pedestrians.
The region expects the flashing lights to be working later this week.
