Town Councillor Nick Ruller is stepping down from his role as councillor, with the resignation taking effect now.  Ruller has accepted the position of fire chief at the City of Brampton.

“Serving the constituents of Niagara-on-the-Lake has been a privilege that I have not taken lightly,” said Ruller. “I would like to thank the residents of Niagara-on-the-Lake for the confidence and trust that they have placed in me, and I look forward to continuing to give back to the community through other means moving forward."

Nick has been an active part of the Niagara-on-the-Lake community through many different roles, serving as a volunteer firefighter since 1998, becoming the town’s deputy fire chief in 2017, being promoted to fire chief in 2019, supporting local sports as a softball coach, and being councillor since 2022.

"On behalf of town council, I want to extend my sincerest appreciation to Nick Ruller for his time during this term of council,” stated Lord Mayor Gary Zalepa. “Nick’s experience, professionalism and enthusiasm for giving back to the Town have greatly contributed to our Council, and I am proud to have had the opportunity to work alongside him through important community decisions. Thank you, Nick, and Council wishes you success in your new role.”

At the next council meeting, council will formally declare the position vacant. Within 60 days, the Municipal Act then requires council to either appoint a person to fill the vacancy or pass a bylaw requiring a by-election to be held to fill the vacancy. The town will share more information in the coming weeks.

The town wishes Nick the best of luck in his new role and all future endeavours.
