NOTL to hold flag-raising for National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

Sept. 30 is National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, a day to reflect on Canada's historical past regarding the residential school system, educate ourselves on how this legacy continues to affect Indigenous Peoples and offer support.

Each year, the Town holds a flag-raising and lowering ceremony and reflective walk to encourage Staff to reflect on the tragic history of residential schools and help ensure this legacy is not forgotten. The flag will be lowered at half-mast until Oct. 1, 2024. Details for the 2024 ceremony are as follows:

  • Date: Friday, Sept. 27, 2024
  • Time: 10 a.m.
  • Location: Flagpole outside the Town Administration Building (1593 Four Mile Creek Road, Virgil)
  • Details: Council and Staff are participating in this ceremony outside the Town's Main Administration Building, where the Strong Water Singers, an award-winning Indigenous collective of drummers from across the Niagara Region, will perform. They are dedicated to decolonization, rebuilding sisterhood, and inspiring future generations. Afterward, participants will engage in a reflective walk around the track at the Virgil Sports Park.

The Town Administration Building and Operations Building, Niagara-on-the-Lake Community Centre and Niagara-on-the-Lake Public Library are closed on Monday, September 30, 2024, to observe this important day.
