Jackfish win seventh straight

GUELPH – The Welland Jackfish stayed red hot Saturday, beating Guelph 14-6 for its seventh straight win.

Greyson Barrett did most of the damage for the Jackfish (10-3), going 3-for-4 with five RBI. Robert Mullen homered and drove in two, Matteo Porcellato singled and added a solo home run, Dawson Tweet picked up three RBI, and Tyler Dupuis drove in a run.

Welland starting pitcher Brandon Marklund (1-0) was dealing, allowing a run on one hit with three strikeouts over five innings.

For Guelph (6-3), Josh Garton homered and drove in three. J.D. Williams and Jeff MacLeod had an RBI apiece, and Ryosuke Ohashi singled, doubled and scored twice.

Jacob Kush made it through four innings to take the loss. He yielded four runs on five hits in four innings. He walked two and struck out four.

Seven-run sixth sparks Barnstormers

CHATHAM – With its offence scuffling through five innings, Chatham-Kent broke out with a bat-round sixth inning to pull away from Barrie in a 12-4 win Saturday afternoon at Fergie Jenkins Field.

The Barnstormers, after scoring two runs on three hits to that point, sent 12 batters to the plate in the sixth inning and scored seven times. Jalen Butcher had the biggest of six Chatham hits in the inning, driving in two with a double. Anthony Polowick and Braxton Haggith each drove in two and scored twice, with Haggith connecting on a solo home run. Daniel Battel went 2-for-4 with three RBI, and Seth Strong singled and went deep with the bases empty.

Chatham improved to 4-8.

Noah Richardson (2-0) earned the win in relief, allowing two runs in two innings with three strikeouts. He didn’t allow a hit but was hurt by six walks. Chatham starting pitcher Brock Whitson lasted five innings, giving up two runs on four hits with five walks and two punchouts.

Noel McGarry-Doyle went 3-for-5 with an RBI for Barrie (8-4). Noah Hull picked up two hits, while Zac Orchard and Brad McQuinn had an RBI. Barrie starting pitcher Carlos Sano (0-2) was charged with five runs on five hits over 5.1 innings. He walked three and fanned four.

Veilleux, Bateman carry Red Sox

BRANTFORD – Jeremie Veilleux and Lucas Bateman each had two hits and two RBI in Brantford’s 6-3 win over Hamilton on Saturday at Arnold Anderson Stadium.

Evan Ryan drove in a run and Roger Keen singled twice.

Jeremias Sucre (3-1) struck out six over six innings for the win. He was tagged with three runs (two earned) on six hits with a pair of walks and three strikeouts. Noah Law pitched a perfect ninth for his first save of 2024.

Brantford improved to 4-8.

Dennis Dei Baning, Keelor Loveridge and Brendon Daley drove in the runs for Hamilton (6-7). Connor Hicks singled and doubled.

Colby Ring (0-1) was stuck with the loss after giving up four runs on three hits with a walk in the first inning.
