The official disc golf course opening at the community centre was celebrated Tuesday afternoon, with a good crowd ready to try it out.

It’s a nine-hole Aceplace course, described on the company’s Facebook page “as good for veteran players to practise their short game, or for new players to try disc golf and have some fun.”

It was supported by the Niagara-on-the-Lake Rotary Club, whose
members helped with the installation.

There are 100 discs at the community to be used by residents, and there is no cost to use them or to play the course.

This course was made possible through a generous donation from Carole and Kurt Von Pasecky on behalf of the Rotary Club.

Disc golf is similar to traditional ball golf; however, players throw a disc into a basket instead of putting a ball into a hole. The object of the game is to finish the course in the fewest number of throws, with the lowest score winning. A hole is started by someone throwing a disc from the tee pad area and completed when the disc rests in the basket.

“The Rotary Club of Niagara-on-the-Lake is proud to offer such a fast-growing recreational sport to the town that is accessible, fun and free for all ages to play," said Paul Lalonde, representing the Rotary Club. "A special thank you to Carol and Kurt Von Pasecky for their generous donation making this project a reality."

By the number of the discs in the basket, it seems those celebrating the opening of the course could use a little practice. (Mike Balsom)
