Police investigating fatal hit and run in Port Colborne

The crash is believed to have happened between 10 p.m. and midnight

On Oct. 6, 2024, at approximately 4:36 a.m. emergency services personnel responded to Silver Bay Road in the City of Port Colborne for a report of a pedestrian having been struck.

6 District uniform officers from the Niagara Regional Police Service (NRPS) attended the scene on Silver Bay Road south of the Friendship Trail.  Niagara Emergency Medical Services paramedics and Port Colborne Fire Service personnel provided treatment to the victim, a 53-year-old man from Port Colborne. The victim was found to be in critical condition. Despite lifesaving efforts he was tragically pronounced deceased at the scene.

The initial investigation determined the victim had been walking on Silver Bay Road. When the victim did not return home his family members began to search the area for him. The victim was located critically injured in the ditch on the east side of Silver Bay Road. Damaged vehicle parts were found strewn about the scene near the victim.

Detectives from the NRPS Collision Reconstruction Unit have been called to the scene and have taken carriage of the investigation. They are being assisted by the detectives from the 3 District (Welland/Pelham) office of the NRPS and the Forensic Services Unit.

The collision is believed to have occurred between 10 p.m. and midnight on Saturday, Oct. 5, 2024. The suspect vehicle is believed to be a dark coloured SUV style vehicle. The suspect vehicle will have damage to the front left corner including the left side headlight, fender, and possibly the grill.

Silver Bay Road south of the Friendship Trail is currently closed for the investigation. The road closure will likely be in place for the morning.

Anyone who may know of a dark coloured SUV style vehicle that frequents the immediate area of the collision is asked to contact detectives. Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact the investigating officers by calling 905-688-4111, option 3, extension 1009367.

Anyone (residents / business owners) who may have been in the area with cell phones, closed circuit video recording, or dash camera footage between 10:00pm and midnight on Saturday October 5, 2024, is asked to review their footage of the area and contact police if they observe anything suspicious.
